Tour Overview

Join Kim Woods Rabbidge for a week in cosmopolitan Singapore. While it’s one of the world’s most innovative cities, Singaporeans honour their heritage too. Our visit coincides with Singapore’s Garden Festival – a leading tropical garden show with designers, florists and horticulturists from around the world. Be enchanted by beautiful show gardens and exquisite floral design.
Few countries in the 21st Century have put so many resources into the landscape generating opportunities and prosperity for residents, and horticultural extravaganzas for visitors from near and far. Their natural landscape is honoured too with connecting, verdant networks throughout the state. Marvel at Gardens by the Bay with spectacular towers that generate power, masquerading as trees. We’ll be in awe of orchids and more in Singapore’s exquisite Botanical Gardens.
We’ll immerse ourselves in local culture, visit two new galleries, and enjoy delicious local fare. Foodies and collectors will love the buzz of the markets. Take a reflective moment in historic sites important to Australia.

TOUR START & FINISH TIME

Day 1, Sunday 4th August: The tour begins at 6.00 pm at hotel lobby.
Day 7, Saturday 10th August: The tour concludes after breakfast at hotel.

Our tour commences from the hotel. Buffet dinner at the hotel. (D)

Enjoy an early morning walk through Fort Canning Park. At Fort Canning, overlooking the city, we’ll spend the morning exploring some of the park’s nine themed gardens including Sang Nila Utama Garden – a recreated ancient landscape. The hill once sited palaces of 14th century Kings and served as the Headquarters of the Far East Command Centre and British Army Barracks. We drop by the new heritage gallery before a late lunch at Le Jardin Restaurant. Later this afternoon we’ll stop by CapitasSpring in the city and head to Level 51 Skygarden with not only a great view, but five themed gardens: Singapore Food Heritage Garden, The Wellness Garden, The Mediterranean Garden, The Australian Native Garden and The Japanese Potager Garden. Nearby we’ll check Marina One, ‘an international role model for living and working’ with landscaping by Kathryn Gustafson and her team. The high-density mixed use building complex defines the ‘Green Heart’ – a public space extending over several stories. Next stop Oasia Hotel, designed by WOHA, wearing 10 times the site footprint in greenery. The tower is draped in climbing plants that are allowed to naturalise, allowing those most suitable for the site to flourish. Four communal sky gardens, on different levels, help minimise the use of air-conditioning. (B L)

Plenty of time today to wander through the Singapore Garden Festival in the grounds of Suntec. Afternoon free. (B)

After breakfast we visit the thoughtfully designed Kranji War Memorial with our guide Christopher who’s a war graves expert. The memorial, honouring men and women who died in the line of duty during World War II, is maintained by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission whose guidelines were set out by Edwin Lutyens and Gertrude Jekyll. Back to the hotel for a midday break. This afternoon’s destination, Gardens by the Bay, offers breath-taking waterfront views. Guided by Principal Horticulturist and Deputy Director Anton Van der Schans, we’ll hear fascinating behind-the-scenes details of these world renown gardens. We visit the mind blowing Supertree Grove, the exquisite Flower Dome, a Floral Fantasy, Kingfisher Wetlands, and the Supertree Observatory. There’ll be time for a snack before we settle in this evening to enjoy the Garden Rhapsody, an enchanting sound and light show amongst the Supertrees. (B)

A visit to the Asian Civilisations Museum which houses one of the region’s most impressive collections of antiquities and decorative arts. This afternoon it’s time for browsing and shopping in two fabulous precincts: The Arab Quarter and Little India. (B)

Singapore’s Botanic Gardens are a must see, and not just for their breathtaking orchid collections. Tropical plant collections are featured in superb grounds. We’ll get up close to preserved forest when we take the HPL Canopy Link to the Gardens’ newest section – The Gallop Extension and visit a new gallery in one of Singapore’s preserved, black and white colonial houses. Farewell lunch at Yantra. You may like to stroll through Tanglin Mall before heading back to the hotel.  Group dinner at Clarke Quay. If you like, this evening you’re free to observe the Singapore National Day fireworks. (B L D)

Tour arrangements finish after breakfast. Make your own way to airport for your departure. (B)
