Tour Overview

Join well-known Australian Ceramicist Marian Howell on a trip of a lifetime to explore some amazing traditional and contemporary Japanese ceramic techniques in 5 major ceramic centres, including Mashiko, Bizen and Shigaraki, a visit to spectacular Naoshima Art Island, and Miho Museum, all the while enjoying Japanese food and culture!

Workshops are strictly limited to 15 potters, although non potting partners or friends are welcome to join us, so if you are interested, please don’t delay!

Highlights:

  • 3-day workshop in Mashiko, plus a free day to explore ceramic museums & galleries
  • 2-day workshop in Bizen with Mr Kazuya Ishida plus studio visit
  • Explore art museums in Tokyo such as Mori Art Museum, 21_21 Design Sight and the National Art Center
  • Visit Inbe pottery galleries and ancient kiln
  • Appreciate Naoshima Art Island including the iconic ChiChu, Lee Ufan Museums and Benesse House
  • Stroll through the Shigaraki Pottery Village
  • Visit the famous Miho Museum designed by I.M. Pei
  • Explore Kawai Kanjiro’s House and Raku Museum, and an informal talk by Robert Yellin in the Yakimono Gallery

About your tour leader - Marian Howell

This tour will be led by the well-known Australian Ceramicist, Marian Howell who will provide expert commentary on ceramics during the tour. Marian is a past president of the Australian Ceramics Association, former Head of Ceramics at the National Art School and Ceramics Design Studio, currently teaching Ceramics part time.
