Mid-Atlantic USA: The Art of Gardens
Fill in the form below and we will send detailed brochure to you within 24 hours.
If you’ve ever thought about visiting some of America’s best gardens this bespoke tour is sure to fulfill your dreams! Over 16 days we discover several of the country’s most awe-inspiring historical, contemporary, public and private gardens. Summer will reveal the countryside and gardens in full, luscious bloom.
We’ll explore designed gardens adorning public spaces, and exquisite private sanctuaries. We’re very privileged to be mingling with talented owners or gardeners; dining, picnicking, and enjoying refreshments in gardens.
A few gardens had their genesis during America’s frontier era when wealthy philanthropists, and leading public figures developed beautiful properties featuring arboretums, ornamental and productive gardens. The contribution of slaves is today acknowledged and honoured.
American gardeners have applied universal design principles as well as inspiring with their own designs, often now focusing on sustainability. Using exotic and native plants to perfection, what all have in common is horticultural artistry.
In addition, visits to stunning galleries and museums will help us appreciate metaphorical and tangible landscapes of America and elsewhere.
We travel comfortably by coach from Washington to Wilmington, Philadelphia, Tarrytown, Connecticut, to Southampton on Long Island, and Brooklyn. Accommodation is in excellent hotels.
Our American guide, Karl Gercens, is a horticulturist who, when not visiting gardens around the world, oversees Longwood’s Conservatory. We are so lucky to have his extraordinary knowledge and unbridled enthusiasm to make our trip extra special!
