Overview

This special craft tour to Japan is designed and led by Jane MacDonald, focusing on a number of hands on crafts including washi paper making, Indigo dyeing, temari ball making, traditional stencilling techniques, tenegui stamp printing, yuzen and shibori dyeing with visits to a number of textile and sashiko related establishments which Jane is excited to share.

  • Explore Tokushima, the heart of Japan’s Indigo industry
  • Learn about Awagami Fine Art Paper that are crafted exclusively in Tokushima 
  • Participate a Temari Ball Workshop with famous artist Eiko Araki 
  • Discover Hiroshima’s World Cultural Heritage sites such as Atomic Bomb Dome and its surrounding memorial park
  • Visit Textile Designer Yumi Ishikita and enjoy a dyeing workshop 
  • Custom your Tenugui-cloth with stamps, "Your own Kurashiki Sanpo”
  • Explore the Kitano Tenmangu Flea Market in Kyoto
  • Enjoy the Yuzen stencil dyeing process by making your own souvenir in the Kodai Yuzen workshop
  • Visit picturesque Nara and explore Kyoto’s many textile and fabric galleries

About your tour leader - Jane MacDonald

Jane MacDonald has been interested in Japanese textiles and crafts for over twenty years, developing a specialty in the craft of sashiko stitching and design. Initially drawn to the quality and detail in the workmanship of Japanese textiles, Jane now teaches sashiko extensively throughout Australia and internationally.

  • 12 night’s twin share accommodation at well-appointed hotels 
  • Shared shuttle transfer from airport to hotel in Osaka and shared shuttle transfer from Kyoto hotel to airport in Osaka
  • Private chartered coach during tour as stated in the itinerary, ferry ticket to Hiroshima
  • Workshops and entrance fees as stated in the itinerary

FITNESS REQUIREMENTS:

In order to get the most from your travels and keep up with the group, a reasonable level of fitness is required.

  • You will need to be able to walk for a few hours at a gentle pace
  • Use combined shower/bath facilities (it is impossible to guarantee walk-in shower facilities)
  • Undertake walking tours of 1-2 hours duration, including using stairs, walking over cobblestones and other uneven surfaces
  • Stand for long periods in museums and other sites
  • Embark / disembark coaches, trains and other methods of transportation without assistance
  • Handle your own luggage
