About your tour leader - Lisa Walton
This tour is designed and led by internationally awarded quilting teacher, textile artist, and author Lisa Walton. Lisa has travelled extensively, taught, lectured and toured for over 25 years. As a quilter, textile artist and (ex) chef/passionate foodie, Lisa created this perfect Textile & Food focused tour to appeal to those who especially appreciate traditional crafts and foods. There will be a two days pass to the Tokyo International Great Quilt Festival 2017. The tour is full of textile workshops, fabric shopping, a cooking class and local food experiences.

Itinerary

Fly with Japan Airlines to Tokyo. Arrive Narita Airport in the evening, we will be met and transferred by chartered coach to our hotel.

After breakfast we leave hotel by chartered coach to visit the beautiful Imperial Palace East Gardens. Then we visit Asakusa Area famous for the Senso-ji Temple. We will stroll along the famous Nakamise Shopping Street before our visit to Amuse Museum where we will see the unique textiles, graphics and product designs with a traditional Japanese aesthetic. Next our chartered coach takes us to Nippori Textile Town, one of the coolest places for fashion designers, tailors, clothing creators, and anyone into crafts or DIY. Tonight enjoy a welcome dinner.

This morning we leave hotel by chartered coach to attend Tokyo International Great Quilt Festival at Tokyo Dome. Apart from the superb quilt competition itself, there are many other quilt exhibits and demonstrations as well as a fantastic array of stalls for shopping. Return to hotel by coach.

Today we will have another opportunity to visit the Tokyo International Great Quilt Festival. Return coach transfer from hotel is included.

This morning we will attend a Japanese cooking class before heading to the biggest Yuzawaya department store in Tokyo for some fabric and yarn shopping. This all-inclusive craft and hobby store stocks loads of Japanese craft books and fabrics, embroidery supplies, buttons, trims, zippers, patterns, books, yarn and more!

Travel by chartered coach to Lake Kawaguchi, en route visit Hakone, the city famous for the view of nearby Mt. Fuji, where we take a cable car ride at Hakone National Park for the spectacular view. We will also enjoy a boat cruise on the scenic Lake Ashi. We then continue travel to Lake Kawaguchi and visit Itchiku Kubota Museum, devoted to kimono artist Itchiku Kubota. Located near Lake Kawaguchi, with a panoramic view of Itchiku’s beloved Mount Fuji, the museum permanently showcases some of his artistic creations and invites visitors to discover the artist who created them. If time and weather permitting, we may pay a brief visit to Mt. Fuji. Dinner at the hotel.

After breakfast, our chartered coach takes us to Odawara station to take Shinkansen (bullet train) to Nagoya, from where we travel by coach to Arimatsu to visit Arimatsu Narumi Shiborikaikan (Tie-Dyeing Museum). The museum was established to conserve and develop the distinctive shibori culture, and introduces shibori extensively through workshops and exhibitions of products/materials of historical and craftwork value. We will experience a tie-dyeing workshop. After the visit we take coach back to Nagoya station to take Shinkansen (bullet train) to Kyoto. Upon arrival in Kyoto station, we will be met and take a short walk to our hotel.

Today we enjoy a full day tour in Kyoto by chartered coach. We will experience the glimmering legacy of medieval Japan and visit the famous Kinkakuji Temple, also known as Golden Pavilion, the lovely Kiyomizu Temple and Kyoto’s best known geisha quarter - Gion District before taking a pleasant stroll along the peaceful Philosopher’s Walk.

After breakfast we leave our hotel by chartered coach to visit the Flea Market at Kitano Tenmangu. The lively flea market is held on the 25th of every month. Next we will attend a Yuzen painting workshop at Nishimuraya. Kyo-Yuzen is one of Japan’s best known dyeing techniques.  After the workshop, we will visit the amazing Kyoto Shibori Museum, where we witness the rare beautiful works of art and take a Shibori Dyeing class to create our own tie-dyed artworks. Our next stop is Nishijin Textile Centre, famous for its traditional kimono fabrics. Here we will attend a Kimono show and experience handweaving by traditional methods on one of mini-looms in the centre.

We leave our hotel by chartered coach to visit Kyoto Museum of Traditional Crafts. This is followed by a visit to Heian Shrine before we head to Nishiki Market, also known as “Kyoto’s Kitchen”, to sample some best traditional food in Kyoto. Our last stop for the day is the wonderful Nomura Tailor, where the sheer variety and volume of fabric are overwhelming.

After breakfast we travel by chartered coach to Kobe. We will stroll around Sannomiya, the largest shopping quarter of Kobe.  Enjoy Kobe Beef for lunch in Kobe, before continue travel to Takamatsu. Upon arrival, check in to hotel.

Today we take limited express train for an excursion to Tokushima, where we visit Aizumicho Historical Museum (House of Indigo). This dyer’s home and factory preserved from the Awa indigo trade was flourishing, displays all of the tools of the trade. Here we will experience an indigo dyeing workshop. Our next stop is the well-known Awagami Paper Factory where we will try our hands for a Washi paper making. In the afternoon, we will take a visit to Awaodori Kaikan. We will enjoy an Awaodori performance and experience Awaodori dance yourself. Later we return to Takamatsu by limited express train.

After breakfast we leave our hotel by chartered coach for a visit to Ritsurin Park, considered to be one of the best gardens in Japan. Then we depart for Osaka. Upon arrival, we will visit the famous landmark - Osaka Castle. We will do our last minute shopping at Shinsaibashi shopping street. Shops of all kinds and for all ages line the street. Enjoy our farewell dinner tonight.

Today we transfer to Kansai airport by chartered coach for our overnight flight home.
