About your tour leader - Marian Howell

The tour will be led by the well-known Australian Ceramicist, Marian Howell who will provide expert commentary on ceramics during the tour. Marian is a past president of the Australian Ceramics Association, a former Head of Ceramics at the National Art School and is currently Head of the Ceramics Design Studio, Sydney.  Marian's passion for Ceramics and more than 35 years' experience as a Ceramicist and Teacher will enable her to explain and discuss the Ceramics you see and experience.

 
About Jingdezhen
Jingdezhen is made up of hundreds of small, independent craftsmen and artists and the entire area has been dedicated to Porcelain production for 1,700 years.  The area abounds with clay producers, throwers, sculptors, mould makers, blue & white decorators, glaze shops, public kilns, brush makers, blacksmiths, and box makers to create a unique centre for craftsmen in a vibrant living and working community. 
We will have opportunities to see clay producers, throwers, sculptors, mould makers, blue & white decorators, glaze shops, and public kilns, including demonstrations as well as participating in specialist workshops that will give an exciting opportunity to experience first-hand some of the techniques that have made this area famous.

Itinerary

Depart Sydney today on an Air China flight for Shanghai. Arrive into Shanghai in the evening, where you will be met and transferred to your hotel.

Today we walk along the famous Bund past the facades of the colonial buildings lining the Huangpu River and look across to the soaring TV tower and fantastic skyscrapers of the Pudong district. And visit the beautifully maintained Yu Garden, an outstanding example of a classical garden, now surrounded by a bustling market area. Then comes the renowned Shanghai Museum, famous for its collection of paintings, sculptures, porcelain, costumes, ancient bronzes and other artefacts.

Transfer to the airport for your flight to Jingdezhen. Upon arrival, we will be met and transferred to The Pottery Workshop Jingdezhen.

During the days at workshop in Jingdezhen, you explore traditional Chinese methods of ceramics production. There is opportunity for us to see clay producers, throwers, sculptors, mould makers, blue & white decorators, glaze shops, and public kilns, etc.

Depart Jingdezhen today by coach for Tunxi. We will visit Hongcun Village, first built in the Song Dynasty, is laid out in the shape of cattle. With over 130 ancient houses, the village naturally blends into the exquisite landscape, known as a "village in traditional Chinese painting". Next we visit the beautiful Xidi Village, an optimum place to see the old typical folk houses of the southern Anhui Province.

Today travel up the mountain to Huangshan by cable car. This world famous range, with its jungle of lofty granite peaks, is one of China’s most famous sights. Its landscape features “four wonders” of imposing peaks, spectacular rocks, odd-shaped pines, and a sea of clouds.

After descending from the mountain, you then travel by coach to Hangzhou. At sunset, you will take a cruise on the incomparable West Lake, for centuries one of China’s best known scenic attractions.

This morning you will visit the Lingyin Temple, one of the most famous Chan (Zen) temples in China. Later you will ascend to Leifeng Pagoda to enjoy a panoramic view of West Lake. In the afternoon, you will stroll along Qinghefang Street, one of the most famous historic streets in Hangzhou, reflects features of the Southern Song Dynasty. Farewell dinner tonight.

Depart Hangzhou today for Shanghai, where you will be transferred to the airport for your flight home.
