About Your Tour Leader - Lisa Walton
This tour is designed and led by internationally awarded quilting teacher, textile artist, and author Lisa Walton. Lisa has travelled extensively, taught, lectured and toured for over 25 years. As a quilter, textile artist and (ex) chef/passionate foodie, Lisa created this perfect Crafts & Food focused tour to appeal to those who especially appreciate traditional crafts and foods. The tour is full of textile workshops, fabric shopping, a cooking class and local food experiences.

Fitness

As this trip will include walking over uneven surfaces it would not be suitable for those with mobility issues.  It is expected that each participant is capable of walking 1km+ effortlessly, can carry their own luggage, and is able to get on and off a bus without assistance.

 
Itinerary
Arrive in Hanoi. Group transfer to the hotel (Individual transfers can be arranged on request). Dinner at hotel.

Visit the ancient silk village of Van Phuc the most famous traditional village for weaving silk of Vietnam. Discover how they create the perfect silk products, a complex technical process includes several work stages such as sewing, weaving and dyeing silk. Have free time for shopping at Van Phuc Silk Village for silk products as souvenirs to bring home. Then visit Craft Link for artefacts made by hillside tribes, and the amazing Hom fabric markets.

Depart Hanoi for Sapa by road. Arrive in Sapa in the early afternoon. Take a walking tour to Cat Cat Village. Enjoy beautiful landscape and scenery along the road. Learn about the culture customs and unique people with traditional crafts. Return to Sapa for overnight.

Visit Bac Ha Sunday Market which is a very typical market with great opportunity to discover the local life. The market is particularly lively and colourful with the flower Hmong wearing traditional costumes. In the afternoon, take a walk to Ban Pho village, located in a valley with fascinating landscapes inhabited by the flower H'mong minority.

Travel to Ta Phin Village, home of Red Dzao people, view some intriguing works and collections of ancient designs from local weavers. Spend the morning learning baste fibre techniques and indigo dyeing of H’mong and Dzao people. You will also have the chance to attend a hands-on fabric workshop to learn about traditional weaving, and have private meeting with textile artists and craftspeople. Practice the process, including age-old raw tree dye techniques. Enjoy lunch with craftspeople. Then take an overnight sleeper train back to Hanoi.

Morning arrival in Hanoi. Early check in and breakfast at hotel. Enjoy a city tour including the Temple of Literature, Vietnam’s first university dating back to 1070, and the Museum of Ethnology. The day finishes with a traditional performance of the famous Vietnamese water puppets.

Morning at leisure. In the afternoon, embark on a street food tour in Hanoi’s Old Quarter by visiting the maze of bustling streets and markets.

Travel from Hanoi to Halong Bay, one of the world’s natural wonders as well as one of the most beautiful destinations in Vietnam. Board our boat for a two-night cruise around the islands.

Continue on exploring the magnificent Halong Bay and some of the many islets during the voyage. Watch a Masterchef Competition show and fruit carving demonstration while the boat cruises to our overnight anchorage area.

Disembark our cruise and transfer to airport for our flight to Danang. Upon arrival, travel to Hoi An by road. Nestled on the banks of the Thu Bon River, Hoi An was an international trading port as far back as the 17th century. Influences from Chinese, Japanese and European cultures are well-preserved in local culture.

A culinary adventure with a Thuan Tinh Island Cooking Class. Purchase fresh ingredients from a local market, see the chef’s cooking demonstrations and prepare our own tasty Vietnamese lunch.

Start a walking tour with a lion's share of places of interest: the 400-year old Japanese Covered Bridge; the Phuc Kien Assembly Halls; the museum and the colourful local market. Afternoon you will be taken to a local house where you will try your hand at traditional lantern making.

Morning at leisure. Travel back to Danang for flight to Ho Chi Minh City. Upon arrival, transfer to hotel.

City tour including visits to Reunification Palace, the Notre Dame Cathedral and Old Post office and Ben Thanh Market for an insight into where locals shop. Also visit the XQ Hand Embroidery Centre. Hand embroidery combines exquisitely designed snapshots of traditional Vietnamese lifestyles, colours and culture with intricate craftsmanship. Farewell dinner tonight.
